Pocket WiFi or eSIM for a Family in Japan?
Choose by how many separate groups need internet, not just how many phones you have. One pocket WiFi can suit people staying together. Adults splitting up need independent data or another agreed way to reconnect. Compare complete trip prices after checking every phone’s compatibility.
Do this now
- List the people who may go out separately: one adult shopping, another taking the children back, or someone arriving on a different flight. Each separate group needs a workable connection plan.
- Check carrier lock and eSIM support for each phone that would receive a plan. A tablet used only beside a parent does not necessarily need its own paid connection.
- Get quotes for the same travel dates. Compare one shared router plus any independent backup with the total of the individual plans you actually need. Include delivery, protection you choose and extra rental days.

Which situation are you in?
We will stay together all day
A shared router may reduce the number of plans to manage. Decide who carries it and who charges it. Everyone depending on it also depends on that person remaining nearby; a hotel-room router does not provide internet to someone sightseeing across town. Before choosing, check the selected device’s connection limit against your phones and tablets.
Two adults may split up
Treat this as two connectivity groups. Options include separate phone plans, two routers, or one router plus an independent plan on the other adult’s compatible phone. Do not count a hotspot from the first adult as an independent backup: it disappears when that adult leaves.
One phone is locked
That phone can use ordinary Wi-Fi from a router without installing a new travel eSIM. Ask its home carrier about unlocking or roaming. It may still be useful to put a Japan plan on an unlocked family member’s device, but check tethering permission before relying on sharing.
Children have tablets
Count simultaneous devices, not passengers. Ask whether the selected rental can connect them all. Download entertainment before leaving trusted Wi-Fi and decide which adult keeps the router. A child’s tablet being connected is not a substitute for a safe meeting plan if the family separates.

Before you continue
We have not tested network speed or coverage. “Unlimited” does not by itself establish tethering rules, simultaneous-device capacity or performance. Compare the terms of the exact products, not just their headline labels.
Related questions
Is one router always cheaper for four people?
No. Rental duration, optional charges and how many people need their own data change the comparison. A low per-day headline can still cost more than a few modest individual plans. Enter actual full-trip quotes below.
Do we need both pocket WiFi and eSIM?
Only if they solve different needs, such as a shared connection for locked devices and independent data for someone going out alone. Buying both without such a need simply adds cost.
Can everyone keep their home phone number?
A data plan and a phone number are separate choices. Check your home carrier’s rules for calls, texts and roaming. Do not assume a travel data product includes ordinary telephone calls.
What should we save before separating?
Save the hotel address, a meeting place and a meeting time on each phone. Decide how to contact one another if a connection fails; do not make your only fallback another internet-dependent app.
