Locked Phone in Japan? Internet Options Before You Buy an eSIM
Do not buy a travel eSIM to remove a carrier lock. Ask your current carrier about unlocking; otherwise compare its roaming offer with portable Wi-Fi. A phone that cannot use a new carrier’s SIM can still connect to ordinary Wi-Fi.
Do this now
- On an iPhone, open Settings → General → About and check Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means it is unlocked. On other phones, confirm the status with your carrier rather than guessing from an eSIM menu.
- Check the exact model and regional version against the travel provider’s supported-device list. Being unlocked does not create eSIM hardware support, and having an eSIM menu does not prove the phone is unlocked.
- If unlocking cannot be completed before departure, compare your home carrier’s Japan roaming terms with a router rental. Confirm how you will receive the router and reach the hotel before pickup.

Which situation are you in?
My carrier says I am eligible to unlock
Complete its process before paying for a travel plan. Recheck the actual status on the device afterward. An eligibility message is not the same as a completed unlock. Apple directs unlocking requests to the carrier; a travel eSIM seller cannot remove the carrier’s restriction.
My carrier will not unlock it yet
Compare the total roaming cost for your dates with portable Wi-Fi. A router is another device to carry, charge and return, but it does not require replacing the locked phone’s SIM. Decide what happens if you leave the router at the hotel or another family member takes it out.
I have an older unlocked spare phone
Check that exact spare device against the intended plan. If using it as a hotspot, confirm that tethering is allowed, test connecting your everyday phone before relying on it and plan for both batteries. A spare without eSIM support might need a compatible physical SIM instead.
I already bought an eSIM and cannot install it
Keep the order details and the exact error. Contact the seller about eligibility and its refund policy before purchasing another product. Do not promise yourself a refund, delete working SIMs or pay a stranger for an unofficial unlocking service.
このスマートフォンはSIMロックされています。SIMを交換せず、ポケットWi-Fiに接続して使いたいです。
This smartphone is carrier-locked. I would like to use it by connecting to pocket WiFi without changing its SIM.

Before you continue
Wi-Fi internet, ordinary phone calls and SMS are different services. Keeping your home line enabled may allow chargeable activity depending on your carrier. Ask the carrier how to avoid unwanted charges while retaining any calls or verification texts you need.
Related questions
Does an eSIM bypass a carrier lock?
Do not assume so. Verify with the carrier and provider before purchase. Unlocking is a carrier process, not a benefit included with a travel data package.
Can a locked iPhone use airport Wi-Fi?
A carrier lock restricts use with other carriers; it is not a prohibition on ordinary Wi-Fi. Connect to the network identified by the venue and follow its login process. That connection does not follow you after you leave its coverage.
Is pocket WiFi the only alternative?
No. Your existing carrier may sell a Japan roaming option. An already-compatible spare phone may also help. Compare what you already have before renting anything.
When should I stop troubleshooting?
If the carrier confirms the phone remains locked and cannot be unlocked for the trip, stop buying replacement travel eSIMs. Make a connection plan that works with that restriction.
