Shinkansen Oversized Luggage: Measure and Reserve the Right Seat
For ordinary suitcases on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, add the outside height, width and depth. Over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires a seat with an oversized baggage area. At 160 cm or less, that size-based reservation is not required. Other size, weight and storage limits still apply.

- Measure the packed outside of the suitcase in centimetres, including wheels and protruding handles. Add all three sides. Do not substitute litres or the advertised suitcase inch size.
- If the total exceeds 160 cm, select the specific oversized-baggage seat category when booking. An ordinary reserved seat alone is not a reservation for the area behind the last row.
- Check the issued reservation, every train segment and the actual bag count and weight. If suitable seats are unavailable, compare another departure or a separately confirmed luggage-delivery plan before paying.

Which situation are you in?
The total is exactly 160 cm
JR Central’s baggage table places up to 160 cm in the category that does not require the oversized-baggage reservation. Measure carefully if the bag is close to the threshold. Being in that category does not guarantee you can lift it or that a particular rack position will be empty.
There is a new storage area near the doors
JR Central also describes shared baggage storage on some trains that does not require a reservation. That is distinct from the reserved oversized-baggage area; it is not a reason to skip the required reservation for an oversized suitcase. Follow the current operator instructions for the train you will use.
Ordinary seats are available but baggage seats are not
The two inventories are different. Search another departure that offers the required seat type. Do not buy a random back-row seat or assume paying a fee onboard guarantees a place for your suitcase.
The bag is hard to lift even though it is under the threshold
Plan for handling, not just arithmetic. Consider requesting a suitable baggage-area seat even if the size rule does not require one, or reduce what you carry. Do not assume staff will be available to lift a heavy suitcase at boarding time.

Before you continue
This helper covers the ordinary-suitcase size threshold only. It does not approve weight, number of bags, unusual items or a different railway’s rules. A total above 250 cm is outside JR Central’s ordinary carry-on size limit; ask about another transport arrangement.

Can I reserve these seats a year ahead in SmartEX?
SmartEX excludes oversized-baggage seats from its one-year advance booking. Check its baggage-seat booking instructions when the relevant sales window opens. An early ordinary reservation is not a substitute.
Can an English ticket agent arrange it?
Ask the seller explicitly and obtain confirmation before buying. This site does not assume every agent’s checkout supports the required baggage seat. If it cannot confirm the arrangement, use an official channel or station staff.
What if I change trains after booking?
Check that the replacement reservation includes the required baggage area. A seat on another train does not automatically carry your original baggage-space reservation with it.
