Its published window begins at 05:30 Japan time one year before the travel date, for eligible reservations with limited availability. Exact train and seat details are confirmed around one month before travel; the guide says to check after 14:00 on that date. Read the current rules for your product, rather than assuming the initial screen is a final seat assignment.
I need an oversized-baggage seat
SmartEX excludes this category from one-year advance reservations, along with certain other products. Use the dedicated baggage guidance for the relevant sales window. Buying an ordinary advance reservation does not establish that a baggage-area seat will be available later.
An agent accepts an order months before departure
Check what it is accepting. Japan Bullet Train says it takes orders up to 150 days ahead, but tickets are issued within the JR one-month sales window. Its order request is not the same as the agent having secured your chosen seats. Read its alternatives and refund handling before committing.
I want to wait until I am in Japan
Compare your flexibility with the consequence of missing the intended departure. A solo flexible trip differs from a group needing adjacent or baggage seats.
