Shinkansen with Children: Tickets and Seats Together
Decide who needs their own reserved seat before booking. A young child traveling without a fare does not automatically get an empty seat beside you. Check the actual seat map or ask the seller to confirm your family’s arrangement; selecting several passengers is not a guarantee that everyone sits together.
Do this now
- Write down each traveler’s age on the travel date and whether each young child needs a separate reserved seat. Use the fare definitions of the exact booking service.
- Search your whole party and inspect the seat map where available. Choose a workable arrangement—adjacent seats, across the aisle or nearby rows—rather than relying only on a window-seat preference.
- Before paying, check passenger counts, train, assigned seats and any luggage or accessibility needs. After an advance request, check the final confirmation again when the seller assigns the seats.

Which situation are you in?
Our toddler needs a seat for the journey
SmartEX says an infant or baby occupying a reserved seat on their own needs a child ticket. Do not exclude the child from a seat request merely because their age can otherwise qualify for free travel. Confirm the right booking category if the form is unclear.
Our young child will sit with an adult
Read the free-travel conditions and exceptions. SmartEX generally classifies ages 6 to under 12 as children, with specified Japanese-school exceptions; it also limits accompanying infants traveling free. Ask the seller about your exact party if it falls near an age or accompaniment boundary.
The seats shown are separated
Try another departure if sitting together matters more than the exact train time. If you continue, agree on a suitable adult-child arrangement before payment. Do not plan to fix an unsuitable booking by asking strangers to move after boarding.
We booked months ahead
Read whether the exact seats are already assigned. An early request or seat preference is not the same as a finalized seat map. Put the seller’s confirmation date in your plans and check the issued details before relying on a particular arrangement.

This guide focuses on family reservation decisions, not a universal fare calculator. Products, age definitions and special arrangements vary. Tell the seller about strollers and large suitcases as well as the number of seats needed.
Related questions
Do young children always travel free?
No. Age is only part of the rule. A young child using their own reserved seat is one example requiring a child ticket. Read the operator’s exceptions rather than assuming every under-six journey is free.
Can SmartEX show a seat map?
Its reservation guide explains selecting a fare and opening the seat map. Availability depends on the reservation process and timing; follow the displayed options for your booking.
Will an agent guarantee adjacent seats?
Only rely on what the seller confirms for your order. Ask how it handles an unavailable seating request before paying. No seller can create seats on a sold-out train.
Should we buy Green Car tickets for a family?
Compare the actual seating, price and your needs. A more expensive car is not required just because you have children. First find a suitable arrangement at the fare you are comfortable paying.
